Lockheed Martin Australia is an industry leader in defence and technology, bringing leading edge concepts and technology to Australia in the fields of aeronautics, maritime, land, surveillance, cyber, space, C4ISR and civil domains. The company has opened their research and development facility ‘STELaRLAB’ in Melbourne and have partnered with Australia’s finest minds and academic institutions to solve some of the world’s enduring and emerging challenges.
STELaRLab stands for Science, Technology, Engineering Leadership, Research Laboratory and works to achieve Final Operational Capability (FOC). The R&D center was announced just over a year ago and has already achieved FOC and doubled expectations of staff build up.
STELaRLab acts as the company’s national R&D operations centre in Australia and is the first of its kind outside of the US. The centre will predominately specialise in next-generation C4ISR information systems, space situation awareness, UAV technologies and VR technologies.
Australia was selected to establish Lockheed Martin’s R&D hub due to the country’s significant capabilities in R&D and scientific leadership.
Australian defence has a long-standing relationship with Lockheed Martin and in this time have demonstrated a high level of commitment to work with Defence on building capability.
Since opening, STELaRLab has also been exploring autonomy, robotics, and command, control, communications, computing, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Additionally, it is also partnering with universities to support PhD projects under the Australian Post Graduate award program.
It is anticipated that the R&D facility will have a successful future in its research endeavours and the team look forward to its future contributions to the Defence Innovation System.
