The ATO have recently released their annual report for the FY21 period, which is designed to inform parliament, stakeholders and the community about how the ATO have administered the tax and superannuation systems.
Within the report are final statistics on the R&D Tax Incentive, which is jointly administered by the ATO and AusIndustry.
Key statistics on the incentive from the period are as follows:
- Value of claims processed for the 38.5% R&D Offset was Steady from the prior year:
- $2.2b tax offset paid in 2020-21;
- $2.1b tax offset paid in 2019-20;
- Value of claims processed for the 43.5% Refundable R&D Offset increased over the prior year:
- $2.7b tax offset paid in 2020-21;
- $2.3b tax offset paid in 2019-20;
- Number of claims processed for the 38.5% R&D Offset was Steady from the prior year:
- 1,488 claims in 2020-21;
- 1,468 claims in 2019-20;
- Number of claims processed for the 43.5% Refundable R&D Offset increased over the prior year:
- 11,638 claims in 2020-21;
- 10,017 claims in 2019-20;
- The Proportion of offsets processed within service standard time frames slightly increased in 2020-21;
